The NFL has levied a hefty $250,000 fine on Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for an action he describes as an “inadvertent” obscene gesture made toward fans during a recent game at the Jets’ stadium.
Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, but Jones insists he was actually signaling approval to Cowboys fans in attendance as his team secured a decisive win.
“That was regrettable. It was kind of an exchange with our fans seated near me,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “Present was a large group of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was filled with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”
He further clarified that the gesture was entirely unintentional, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I just showed the incorrect finger,” he noted. “The action was inadvertently done. This is sincere. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. But it got resolved rapidly.”
League Precedent for Proprietor Penalties
This incident isn’t the initial instance an NFL owner has been fined for misconduct. Previous cases include:
- Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at fans in early 2024.
- Former Tennessee Titans proprietor Adams received a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.
Jones, who is known for his media savvy, possesses an estimated wealth of around $16bn, so the fine easily payable for the wealthy proprietor.

The incident comes after a contentious preseason for Jones, who encountered widespread criticism from the Dallas supporters after the team dealt star pass rusher Parsons to the Packers.
