Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People using such treatments should be cognizant of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to starting weight within about 18 months.

Comparing Approaches

The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Experts suggest the way of the injections accounts for the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Accounts

People who have come off the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a switch that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," described a patient.

The struggle is exacerbated if users have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is more common among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle support.
