JP Morgan Requires Fingerprint or Eye Scans for Main Office Admission
The financial institution has told personnel assigned to its state-of-the-art main office in New York that they must provide their physical characteristics to access the multibillion-dollar building.
Shift from Voluntary to Mandatory
The investment bank had initially envisioned for the enrollment of physical identifiers at its recently opened skyscraper to be discretionary.
Yet, staff of the US's largest bank who have begun work at the new headquarters since this summer have been sent electronic messages stating that biometric entry was now "mandatory".
The Technology Behind Entry
The new entry system requires employees to scan their eye patterns to gain access entry points in the entrance area in place of swiping their identification cards.
Office Complex Information
The main office building, which apparently cost $3 billion to build, will ultimately serve as a base for thousands of employees once it is completely filled in the coming months.
Safety Justification
The banking institution did not provide a statement but it is believed that the employment of biometric data for entry is created to make the facility more secure.
Alternative Access Methods
There are exceptions for specific personnel who will retain the ability to use a ID card for admission, although the criteria for who will employ more conventional entry methods remains undefined.
Supporting Mobile Applications
Complementing the deployment of physical identifier systems, the company has also released the "Corporate Access" mobile app, which acts as a virtual ID and portal for staff resources.
The platform permits users to coordinate guest registration, use indoor maps of the facility and schedule dining from the facility's 19 on-site dining vendors.
Security Context
The deployment of enhanced security measures comes as US corporations, notably those with substantial activities in New York, look to strengthen protection following the incident of the chief executive of one of the US's largest health insurers in summer.
The CEO, the leader of the healthcare company, was killed in the incident not far from the bank's location.
Additional Office Considerations
It is uncertain if the banking institution plans to implement biometric access for personnel at its offices in other key banking hubs, such as the British financial district.
Broader Workplace Monitoring Trends
The decision comes within debate over the implementation of systems to monitor employees by their companies, including tracking office attendance levels.
In recent months, all staff members on flexible arrangements were directed they have to report to the physical location full-time.
Leadership Viewpoint
The company's leader, the financial executive, has described JP Morgan's new skyscraper as a "impressive representation" of the institution.
The banker, one of the world's most powerful bankers, this week alerted that the likelihood of the American markets experiencing a decline was much more substantial than many market participants anticipated.
