Madeleine McCann Suspect Freed from Germany’s Jail
A prime person of interest in the widely publicized case of Madeleine McCann has been released from a German prison, where he was serving a sentence for an unrelated offence.
The German national was driven out of jail by his legal representative. He remained out of sight in the car, but police confirmed his exit from Sehnde Prison.
He had been convicted of raping an senior citizen in Praia da Luz in 2005 and will be required to wear an electronic monitor after his exit.
Brückner, 48, has not faced charges with offenses linked to the McCann case. He denies all connections.
Background of the Disappearance
The young girl vanished in the holiday destination of Praia da Luz in 2007. The children had been left sleeping in a holiday apartment while her parents, Kate and Gerry, were dining at a nearby restaurant.
The case has become one of the highest-profile unsolved missing person cases in the world.
Probe and Evidence
Investigators in Germany have pointed to data—such as mobile phone records—suggesting Brückner may have been in the area when she went missing, and have consistently insisted that they believe he is responsible.
However, they have not found sufficient evidence to bring charges.
Brückner, who resided for long periods in the southern Portugal, was a drifter, a minor offender, and a convicted sex offender. He has several prior offenses, including sexually abusing minors in 1994 and recent years.
Recent Investigative Efforts
Authorities from both police conducted a fresh operation between the family’s holiday location and properties linked to the suspect in June this year, but this yielded no breakthroughs.
In 2023, investigators conducted searches near the a local water source, about 50 kilometers from the resort.
The man was present in the region between the early 2000s to the late 2010s and had images and recordings of himself near the body of water.
Legal Challenges
Months ago, Brückner was acquitted of unrelated sexual offences by a judicial body, which were said to have occurred in the country between 2000 and 2017.
Due to variations between legal systems, German authorities believe him of murder in connection with the case, while UK authorities continue to treat her disappearance as a missing persons matter.
The funding allocated for the Met's investigation has totalled more than 13 million pounds since over a decade ago. A further £108,000 was secured from the UK authorities in April.
The child went missing in 2007, at the age of three.
