Oklahoma City Thunder Kick Off Championship Defense with Nail-Biting Double Overtime Triumph
The Thunder star joined the Thunder in 2019.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored the winning baskets late in a second overtime period as the defending champions started their championship campaign with a 125-124 victory over the visiting Rockets.
The reigning MVP poured in 35 points, including two clutch free throws with just mere seconds remaining in double OT, giving the champions a positive start.
Houston's Alperun Sengun led all scorers with a game-high 39 and also hit a career-high five three-pointers.
But Chet Holmgren, who added 28 points of his own, played a major role together with the game's hero.
"Determination and defence," SGA said of their showing. "We know that when we execute on defence we give ourselves a chance no matter what's going on—shots, missed attempts, fortune or bad luck. We did sufficient defence to secure the victory. We're pretty rusty, but it's a positive beginning."
Prior to the game, the team's title banner was raised at their home court, while the squad were presented with their title rings.
Oklahoma City beat the Pacers in last season's best-of-seven NBA Finals. It was their maiden championship since the team moved in 2008 to Oklahoma City from Seattle, who had claimed the 1979 crown.
Indiana will have the chance to get some payback on this Friday when they host Oklahoma, while the Rockets return to action on the identical day at the Pistons.
Elsewhere, a huge effort of 43 points, 12 rebounds and nine dimes from the Slovenian star was insufficient to stop his new team the Los Angeles Lakers from falling to a 119-109 defeat against the Golden State Warriors.
Miami's star picked up 31 points and Stephen Curry chipped in 23 for the visiting Warriors.
The Lakers were missing the league's top scorer LeBron James as he recovers from sciatica.
