An extensive 60-day journey circling Australia was terminated days after the fatal incident of an older woman who was abandoned by the ship on a distant coastal location.

The elderly woman had been hiking on Lizard Island with other travelers from the vessel, but broke off from the group for a break. The liner departed without her and came back several hours later after the ship staff became aware the lady was missing.

An extensive search operation discovered her person the following day.

Authorities are investigating the tragedy, alongside police and the medical examiner.

Head of the shipping company announced that passengers and crew on the ship were informed that the rest of the journey had been called off due to the "tragic passing and prior technical problems".

Through an announcement, he mentioned that passengers would be issued a full refund, and said the operator was working "to organize the return journeys of the passengers via chartered flights".

Regulatory bodies also published an updated announcement, and said they had "provided a notice to the Captain" banning any new passengers from getting on the liner.

The representative said that they would visit the vessel in Cairns upon its arrival.

Timeline of Events

The liner initially left the Australian port on 24 October, and was just two days into the expedition at the point of the senior passenger's death. The remote island was the initial destination on the itinerary.

Guests on board - who generally pay large sums of dollars to take part in the voyage - were taken there for a daily excursion with the option of trekking or snorkeling.

Relatives Reaction

The daughter of the victim said that her relatives was "surprised and distressed that the liner left the island after an scheduled excursion without my mother".

Through her comments, she portrayed her mother as an "vigorous elderly person" who was a member of a bushwalking club.

"From the little information we have been provided, it looks that there was a breakdown of care and basic judgment," she said.

She continued that she wished the examination would be able to determine what "the organization should have done that might have preserved Mum's being".

"We understand from the authorities that it was a very hot day, and mother took sick on the uphill trek," she explained.

"They requested her to return, alone. Then the boat sailed away, apparently without conducting a roll call.

"At some stage in that process, or not long after, she passed away, alone."

Operator Reaction

In a statement, the CEO verified that the organization was "collaborating extensively with officials to aid their inquiry".

He stated that the organization was "very regretful that this has occurred" and had provided its total backing to the relatives.

Shipping Sector Standards

The ship serves up to a hundred twenty passengers with nearly fifty personnel, according to company details. It was specially constructed to access isolated areas of the nation's coast and is fitted with "tenders" - minor craft used to transport individuals on shore trips.

Occurrences such as this are uncommon, and cruise ships have protocols to document which passengers are getting on or getting off, according to maritime specialists.

"Leaving covertly or [back] on the ship simply isn't an choice," a specialist commented.

Cruise lines consider these methods extremely carefully and have "clever tech in place to stop such incidents from occurring," the authority further stated.

"This is presumably a surprising - and sad - single occurrence."
